Quick answer

Is Grigora the right ExpressionEngine alternative?

Grigora is an ExpressionEngine alternative for teams that want a managed website, CMS, newsletter and store without maintaining PHP hosting or templates. Keep ExpressionEngine when custom channels, field relationships, precise markup or member permissions are essential. Compare the full hosting and implementation cost, not just the software licence.

Choose Grigora if you want…

  • A working site before you have chosen a host
  • Pages edited by people who do not write template tags
  • A subscriber list and campaigns without a second product
  • An included store without a separate add-on purchase
  • Updates, TLS and backups that are not your job

Stick with ExpressionEngine if you…

  • •Need arbitrary content types with Grid, Fluid and relationships
  • •Have markup requirements that no builder is allowed to touch
  • •Run gated member areas or a multi-site estate on your own servers
Bottom line: Choose ExpressionEngine for custom modelling and code control, or Grigora for a managed website workflow.

Why people switch from ExpressionEngine to Grigora

The friction points EE teams describe most often, and what Grigora does instead.

1

The licence was the cheap part

Include the licence, hosting, implementation and any selected commerce or SEO add-ons. Metadata can also be built with custom fields and templates, so an SEO add-on is optional.

2

The person who knew the templates has left

ExpressionEngine sites are built to their author's shape. When that agency relationship ends, the remaining team inherits template files they did not write and a control panel that will not lay out a new page for them.

3

Every non-content change is a release

The Dock and front-end editing let an editor change words inside a layout. Adding a section, restructuring a page or launching a campaign landing page still goes back to whoever built the templates.

4

Your version has an expiry date

EE 6 stopped receiving bug fixes at the end of 2025 and its security fixes end on 31 December 2026, which turns an upgrade into a scheduled project. The current LTS has no published end dates at all, so you are planning against a blank cell.

What ExpressionEngine does well

  • Channels and 20 plus native fieldtypes model almost any content shape
  • Templates are your own markup with no generated wrapper output
  • Apache 2.0 licensed and self-hosted, so the code and database are yours
  • Members, roles, gated content, a forum and Multi Site Manager in the box

Where ExpressionEngine falls short

  • No drag-and-drop designer, no theme marketplace and no starter gallery
  • The free Core edition allows a single control panel user
  • Commerce and email integrations are separate; SEO can use custom fields or add-ons
  • You own the PHP host, the patching and the version upgrade project

The licence ladder and what renews

Depends on your needs

ExpressionEngine Core is free for one control-panel user. Pro is $249 initially, with optional ongoing updates from $49/year. Hosting, implementation and any paid add-ons are separate. Grigora bundles a managed website and tools in a recurring subscription.

Takeaway: A maintained existing ExpressionEngine site can be economical. Compare the actual hosting, support and implementation requirements over the same period.

One control panel user, and what it costs to add a second

Depends on your needs

The free Core edition is real open source under the Apache License 2.0, and the live pricing page describes it as suitable for projects that need control panel access for one user. That is the ceiling. The moment a colleague, a client or a freelance editor needs to log in to the CMS you are buying Pro. A vendor blog post from August 2022 says Core also allows unlimited front-end member accounts at no cost; the current pricing page states only the one control panel user limit, so treat the wider claim as unconfirmed.

Takeaway: Compare the included editorial access: Core has one control-panel user; Grigora’s paid plans include five, 15 or unlimited team members.

Channels, Grid, Fluid and the content model

Fit: ExpressionEngine

This is what ExpressionEngine has always been good at, and nothing on this page pretends otherwise. Channels are arbitrary content containers you define yourself. The native fieldtypes include Grid for repeating rows, Fluid for free-form stacked content, Relationships for entry to entry links, a rich text editor, file fields and conditional fields that appear based on other values. A staff directory, an events calendar, a product catalogue and a blog can all be properly different shapes in one install, with per-channel entry versioning and a revisions tab behind them.

Takeaway: If the content model is the hard part of your project, ExpressionEngine is still the better tool and Grigora is not a substitute.

Template tags versus a page you can click on

Fit: ExpressionEngine

An ExpressionEngine template is your own HTML, CSS and JavaScript with EE tags placed where data is needed. There is no wrapper markup you did not ask for, no builder class names and no theme to override, which is exactly why agencies with pixel-exact client designs and strict accessibility requirements stay. The trade is that a page only exists once someone writes it. There is no drag-and-drop designer, no theme marketplace and no starter gallery, and the front-end editing Dock changes content inside a layout a developer already built rather than creating one.

Selling: CartThrob is a separate purchase

Fit: Grigora

ExpressionEngine Core and Pro do not include a product-store backend. CartThrob is one commerce option; it supports products, orders and several payment integrations. Its initial licence is listed at $349, while renewal choices require checking the current add-on terms. Other integrations or custom development may also meet the requirement.

Takeaway: Compare the required commerce features and implementation cost. Grigora includes its store; an ExpressionEngine project can choose a separate commerce integration.

The Communicate utility is not email marketing

Fit: Grigora

ExpressionEngine's only built-in email feature is the Communicate utility in the control panel. It composes a one-off plain text or HTML message to addresses you type in or to every member in selected roles, sends it through SMTP, Sendmail or PHP mail, and keeps a resendable history. That is an admin broadcast tool. There are no subscriber lists, no signup forms tied to content, no templates, no scheduling, no automation and no open or click reporting anywhere in core. Anything that looks like a newsletter means integrating an outside provider, which is why the add-on store keeps Email and Marketing categories.

SEO through templates, custom fields or add-ons

Depends on your needs

ExpressionEngine templates and custom fields can provide metadata, structured data and sitemaps. Add-ons such as SEEO offer a ready-made editorial interface, but purchasing an SEO add-on is not mandatory. The developer controls how the frontend implements those fields.

PHP versions, LTS windows and who applies the patch

Fit: Grigora

ExpressionEngine requires a supported PHP and database environment. Verify its current compatibility requirements and choose runtime versions that still receive security fixes. Hosting, TLS, backups and upgrades may be handled in-house or by a provider. The vendor’s support table lists EE 6 security fixes through 31 December 2026 and does not publish end dates for EE 7.

Takeaway: An LTS window is only a benefit if someone is being paid to watch the calendar and act on it.

Members, gated areas and Multi Site Manager estates

Fit: ExpressionEngine

This is the second place ExpressionEngine is plainly ahead. Core includes a member system with roles and granular permissions, front-end registration and profile forms, gated content and a full discussion forum module. Multi Site Manager runs many distinct sites with separate domains, templates and content from one installation and one control panel, optionally sharing members and assets. It is not free: the vendor FAQ states MSM sites require the $249 initial site licence, and each additional site is $49 for the first year then $39 a year, or $49 for a one-off year. Grigora has no paid memberships or content paywalls at all.

A middle Sapphire support tier sits between Emerald and Diamond at around $199/mo, with a higher pair of figures shown next to an Include Slack Seat toggle that the page does not label. Enterprise Support pricing is not published. Hosting and any chosen store or SEO add-ons are extra; metadata can also be implemented in templates.

Year one on ExpressionEngine Pro is $249 before you have paid for a server, and store functionality needs an integration, while SEO fields can be implemented in templates or an add-on. Grigora Starter is $144 for the year with the site, the CMS, the newsletter and the store already included.

The real cost: Grigora vs ExpressionEngine

For a site needing two CMS users, commerce and a newsletter, compare the Pro licence, hosting, chosen store and email integration with a Grigora plan. SEO metadata can be implemented with custom fields and templates or an optional add-on.

Is Grigora the right ExpressionEngine alternative for you?

Where Grigora is a suitable ExpressionEngine alternative, by situation.

For inherited sites

You took over a site built by an agency that has moved on, the templates are unfamiliar, and nobody in the building can safely touch the PHP host it runs on.

… for small teams paying agency rates for small edits

If a new landing page or a changed section means a quote and a scheduled release, the CMS is not the constraint. The build model is.

… for organisations that need email and a store

On ExpressionEngine those are an external provider and a $349 add-on. On Grigora they are switched on from the $12/mo plan with no platform commission.

ExpressionEngine is the right call if…

You have a developer or agency you trust, your content model needs channels with Grid, Fluid and relationships, the markup has to be exactly yours, or you run gated member areas and a multi-site estate on your own servers. In those cases EE is the better platform and switching would cost you capability.

Which one is right for you?

Choose Grigora if…

  • You want a site live today without choosing a host first
  • A second person needs to edit content without a licence upgrade
  • You would rather not own the patching calendar
  • You need a newsletter and a store without two more purchases
  • You want one predictable bill instead of a licence, a host and add-ons

Choose ExpressionEngine if…

  • •Channels, Grid, Fluid and relationships match your content exactly
  • •The front-end markup has to be written by hand, with nothing generated
  • •You need members, gated content, a forum or Multi Site Manager

How to switch from ExpressionEngine to Grigora

Entries live in MySQL and can be exported, so the content moves. The templates and the channel structure are rebuilt rather than ported, which is usually the reason for leaving in the first place. Test a representative sample against Grigora’s supported import formats before moving everything. Back up media and business records separately, and retain marketing consent and unsubscribe records; an export is not proof of a direct import.

5 migration steps from ExpressionEngine to Grigora, detailed below
A planning checklist, not an automated transfer. Read the steps below before changing your live site.
  1. 1

    Start your Grigora site

Describe the organisation in a sentence and the AI generates a first-draft site with pages, layout and copy, or begin from one of the available website templates.

  2. 2

    Export your entries

Back up the database, uploads and templates, then export a representative set of channel entries and categories. Preserve field relationships and permissions in the backup even if the new site uses a simpler model; licence expiry does not itself delete the content.

  3. 3

    Flatten the channels

Most EE installs collapse into pages, blog posts and one or two collections. Map deliberately rather than recreating every channel, because Grigora's directories are simpler by design.

  4. 4

Move the list and the store

Export only newsletter contacts with marketing consent, preserving unsubscribe records. Test products, variants and media from CartThrob against Grigora’s supported format; retain order history and plan subscriptions or membership access separately.

  5. 5

    Redirect and retire the server

Keep the current service active while testing the replacement. Preserve existing URL paths where possible, configure permanent redirects where you control the old address, and check canonicals, sitemaps, forms and checkout on mobile. Change DNS after these checks, then monitor errors and indexing before cancelling services you no longer need. Rankings can change during migration.

Why people look for an ExpressionEngine alternative in 2026

ExpressionEngine has an unusual history for a content management system still in active development. EllisLab launched it in April 2004, sold it commercially for around sixteen years, relicensed it under the Apache License 2.0 in November 2018, and passed through Digital Locations before Packet Tide acquired it in October 2019. Packet Tide owns and develops it today, added the CartThrob and Expresso Store e-commerce add-ons in February 2025, and shipped release 7.5.26 in July 2026. None of that is a decline story. It is a product with a long tail of installed sites and a group of agencies who know it extremely well, which is exactly the position that produces alternative searches.

Budget beyond the licence

Pro costs $249 for the first year and $49 a year to keep updates flowing. Measured against a monthly subscription that looks like a bargain, and for the software alone it is. The bill you actually pay is somewhere else. A supported PHP and MySQL host with the required extensions. A store, if you sell, which means CartThrob at $349 and roughly $179 to $199 a year after. SEO metadata can use custom fields and templates, or an optional add-on such as SEEO. Marketing email, which means an external provider and an integration. Then the developer hours that connect them. The licence is the smallest number on the invoice and the only one the pricing page shows you.

The knowledge lives with the agency, not the software

An ExpressionEngine site is templates, channels and tags that a specific person designed. There is no theme marketplace to fall back on and no starter gallery to compare against, so the structure of your site is essentially a private convention. That works beautifully while the relationship lasts. When the agency winds down, raises rates or loses the one developer who knew your install, the team left holding the site finds that the control panel is excellent at editing entries and cannot produce a new page layout at all. Front-end editing and the Dock change content inside a layout that already exists. They do not design one.

Free stops at one login

Core is genuinely open source, which matters for procurement and for anyone who wants to audit what they are running. It is also limited to one control panel user on the live pricing page. That is a defensible line for a solo developer, and an immediate wall for a communications team of three. A vendor blog post from 2022 says front-end member accounts are unlimited on Core, but the current pricing page does not repeat that, so it is not something to plan around. In practice, any organisation with more than one editor is on Pro from day one.

How Grigora compares

Grigora is built on the opposite assumption. Instead of buying software and assembling the conditions it needs, you subscribe and the conditions are already there. Hosting, SSL, CDN and backups are part of the plan. The CMS, with posts, categories, author profiles, directories and moderated comments, is switched on. So is a newsletter with a subscriber list, a campaign builder, automations and segmentation, and so is a store with a catalogue, variants, stock and digital downloads at 0% platform commission. Nothing in that list is an add-on with its own renewal date.

A managed subscription with published limits

Grigora Starter is $144/year, equivalent to $12/mo, and includes one site, 15,000 AI credits and 2,500 email subscribers. Pro and Business raise the site and usage allowances. Page, bandwidth, storage and team limits also vary. Managed hosting and updates reduce server administration, while custom content models, integrations and layout requirements should be tested before migration. Professional mailboxes and White Label are separately priced.

Where ExpressionEngine still wins

Three places, and they are real. Content modelling first: channels with Grid, Fluid, relationship and conditional fieldtypes, plus per-entry revisions, go well past collections and directories, and if your content genuinely has that shape you should keep them. Markup control second: an EE template is your HTML with tags in it, so there is no generated output to work around, which matters for strict accessibility work and for designs that must be reproduced exactly. Membership and multi-site third: roles with granular permissions, gated content, a discussion forum and Multi Site Manager cover ground Grigora does not attempt, since Grigora has no paywalls or paid memberships at all. This page is not aimed at teams using any of that. It is aimed at the much larger group who bought a licensed CMS from an earlier era, inherited it from the agency that built it, and now want a website they can run themselves.
